Liberty Public School District has been recognized locally, state-wide and nationally as a premier public school district as evidenced by awards such as the Prestigious "Distinction in Performance Award." In late February the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education selected 181 of Missouri's 524 public school districts to receive its new "Distinction in Performance" award, given to districts that demonstrate consistent gains in academic performance.

Liberty offers post-secondary education as well - William Jewell College is located just east of the historic downtown square. William Jewell is one of the nation's top liberal arts colleges. Jewell has been recognized as the nation's "Best Bargain" in 2004 among private colleges in The Princeton Review and is in the top 10 in The Princeton Review's new guidebook to "America's Best Value Colleges." In 2002, Jewell was TIME Magazine's "Liberal Arts College of the Year".
